Scott Flanz is joining &AI's Advisory Board. Scott is a Principal at Fish & Richardson, one of the nation's premier IP firms, where he handles high-stakes patent matters for leading technology companies.

Scott is a trial lawyer who builds litigation strategies around his clients' business objectives. He has represented clients at trial and on appeal in federal and state courts, before the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC), the Patent Trial and Appeal Board, and Customs and Border Protection, in industries ranging from semiconductors, consumer electronics, and software-hardware integration to optics, industrial machinery, financial products, and pharmaceuticals.

That range shows in his results. Scott served as counsel in a competitor dispute involving leading manufacturers of access and control systems, where the team secured a $43.3 million jury verdict and a running royalty, along with more than $1.1 million in attorneys' fees. He has led clients to favorable outcomes in disputes over authentication technology and HVAC systems, and in proceedings running in parallel at the ITC and in district court.

A significant portion of Scott's practice is standard essential patent (SEP) and FRAND licensing and litigation, where he has helped develop and execute strategy for global disputes involving cellular, video, and other SEPs. Some matters concluded with favorable settlements after hard-fought litigation; others were resolved without litigating at all.

Scott is also a registered patent agent. He counsels clients on prosecution strategy, inter partes review, and IP transactions, and has performed valuation, validity, exclusivity, and freedom-to-operate analyses in connection with multi-billion-dollar transactions.

Before law school, Scott earned his A.B., cum laude, from Cornell University with a double major in mathematics and physics, doing research on Bose–Einstein condensation at Cornell's Laboratory of Atomic and Solid State Physics. He earned his J.D. from Stanford Law School, where he was editor-in-chief of the Stanford Technology and Law Review.

I first worked with Scott as a technical expert on one of his cases, years before &AI existed. What stood out then is what makes him so valuable to us now: he's technically fluent enough to find the weak point in an argument, and enough of a trial lawyer to know whether it matters. If you're building for patent litigators, those are the people you want on your side.

Caleb Harris, CEO of &AI

&AI is at the cutting edge, tackling longstanding problems in patent litigation with impressive precision and scale. I am excited to join the advisory board and bring a practitioner's perspective to that work.

Scott Flanz

The Advisory Board exists to keep practitioner judgment at the center of how &AI gets built, shape what we prioritize, and set the standard the output has to meet before it belongs in a real matter. We're glad to have Scott on it.
